Default n54? Get in here!

I saw a few of us on here, and it's be nice to get a little more local chat going on this platform (other forums get overwhelming). Plus I'd like to compare setups and performance at a closer level.

Anybody?

oooh. A Cobb. There's so much bitching about tune software on other forums. All childish acts aside, how do you like the Cobb? Was that your initial choice?

They all have plusses and minuses. I knew a few people with AP's. For me, I knew I didn't want a piggy back. Have had issues with them before. Besides the installation, I just don't trust that they're always correctly accounting for all changes in values, as the systems usually don't have access to all the ECU data as well, but that's just my opinion.

I like how Cobb is pretty reliable about delivering somewhat conservative off the shelf maps. I can still get a custom tune if I need it. I also was already familiar with the AP from friends who used them in the Subaru world. Logging capabilities are decent for a small handheld and it's relatively easy to switch maps.

A Proceede or whatever it's called is probably just as nice. I'm just not as familiar with them and have always thought Shiv was a bit of an ass at times. They may be better if you want big power though.

I've gone as far as I plan with power, other than maybe eventually getting a custom tune, but I doubt I'll get much more out of it, maybe just smooth it out some...but no real issues with it now.

I'm content with it. I even had some issues with a firmware update on my AP and was able to get it all resolved via Live Chat. They even emailed me later to confirm i was up and running with no issues. So I'm happy with the support.

I agree with you on the Proceed. Before I bought my car I was 100% Cobb, due to my prior research in Sti's. I also liked the ability to have a custom tune. After more research though the most cost effective route was the jb4 I purchased. One of the maps can auto adjust to the conditions, which ensures me that I'm not running a less than efficient or dangerous tune due to fuel quality. I also love the steering wheel controls haha.

Overall the difference between all three in % of power is extremely nominal, so I just went with the one I thought was the most fun and had the best support (Terry is a saint).

Glad to see all is well with yours. I'm still waiting on mine to get out of the shop with her new clutch. Then I can justify pegging the throttle a little more : )

N54 here too, but more weight to move around than you 3 series guys :-)
I have the Cobb AP and love it. I am currently running the stage 1 aggressive map. I also have a Magnaflow catt-back, but not other upgrades (yet)

I really like the ability to install and uninstall the tune whenever I want (when going to dealer etc) right from the handheld.

All the real time monitoring info is neat too, but to be honest, I have no clue what half of it is. I just look at coolant temp, oil temp, charge pipe temp, and boost.

I did a dyno after the exhaust - 253rwhp 273rwtq
the dyno with stage 1 aggressive was 311rwhp 354rwtq

needless to say, I can notice when im running the tune...

I really would like to get to stage 2, but that requires down pipes, and unlike the 3 series, I think there is only 1 manufacture that makes them for the e60 and that's AR Designs.... and they would be around 2K to get the catted version installed. ouch!

nice meeting you Mr Billy yesterday at Timmayfest , heres my official mod list and general n54 observations.

2007 335i purchased with 17k miles
AFE intakes
Cobb AP tuner Stage 2 map
AMS intercooler
AR Design DPs
Evolution Raceworks chargepipe
Tial BOV

With these mods in place the car now requires some sort of LSD mod.

While I'm no mechanic by trade my mechanic loves the Cobb tuner for ease of downloading maps, code clearing etc. Stated the AMS intercooler install was a pain compared to the ETS intercooler install. I had BMW replace my HPFP/pressure sensor at 42k as the car had developed a longer startup crank but never left me stranded or limping. HPFPS are warrantied til 120k. I have had no other issues with the car and is a pleasure to drive. I have also auto xed the car about a 6 times with no problems except the lack of lsd and the heavy weight of the car make it not to thrilling. Serious track day events will probably require some additional oil cooling mods from what I have read.
Car now has 45k on it and have 1 payment left on it. Gonna wait a little bit longer to see how the single turbo development works out

I started back in the day with the turbo tuner back when I had my first 07 335. Then went to Jb2, then to Jb3 and the JB4. For the most part, they are all close in performance and comes down to the features you want. I love being able to change maps (1st and 2nd boost limits help alot) on the fly and have my DTC traction turn on when I start the car without hitting the button and being to turn the water pump and fan on max. On the JB4, the gauge sweep at start up is also cool. This car also wakes up with suspension work.

On my current 09 335 it has:
JB4 (map 2 or 5)
AFE DCI
Downpipe back exhaust with secondary cats removed
AR OCC

Next will be the Wagner intercooler

It was nice meeting everyone this weekend! I love how laid back the crowd is on this forum. I can definitely see myself coming out to many more events in the future. I'm also glad I've got plenty of n54 friends now to play with

Hopefully next show My e90 will be ready to go, fresh clutch and all!

David: I've heard good things about the Wagner intercooler, let me know how it goes if you get it, as well as how the install goes

Fastaction: I can agree on the single turbo improvements, I've got my eye on that set up too. Hopefully after graduation this car will still be running strong enough for me to justify doing some big boy mods

Before you do the tune make sure you have fresh plugs in the car and the valves are not all carboned up.

Tune's already on... I had the jb4 installed within 24hr of purchasing the car

I will say though my first DIY jobs are plugs and eventually an intake manifold cleanup. I figure it'd be a good way to spend a weekend.

Haha 'raped ape.' Well played.

Once I get a better feel for the car and dig back out the usb cord to update to the new firmware, I'm going e85. That was one of the bigger salepoints for me on this car. Do you just leave it in map 5? Have you updated to the new map 5?
