Default Porsche abandoning buttons

Welcoming Porsche owners & admirers

Maybe this is old news for some that follow the brand more closely, but I found the news pretty shocking myself. I always assumed they would keep some physical buttons but these pictures make it look like they're abandoning most/all buttons in favor of touch-sensitive controls. Or maybe it'll only be available on high-level trims. Chevy Volt, Cadillac, Oh my.

I'd imagine the rest of the models would follow suit by MY19 or so?

Don't need buttons. Just a shift knob and a clutch pedal.

Interesting.

It's going to be a solid twenty years before I buy one, so we'll have to see how it holds up...

Porsche is notoriously behind the curve generally when it comes to electronic advancements in their cars. I'm a little shocked to see this...and worried about long term reliability of the electronics. They are usually behind the times but their **** always works since they aren't pushing the envelope.

Hell Porsche didn't have bluetooth compatability until 2009...this new development worries me.

I'm not much of a new car guy myself...so it'll be a few years before I need to deal with this situation.

I don't like it simply for the fact that it forces you to take your eyes off the road to actually look at what you're trying to press rather than being able to "feel" for the button you want.

This. I will always prefer the tactile feel of buttons to touchscreens. Someday, after the newness wears off, and every $15000 econobox has gone to touchscreens, physical buttons will become a "luxury" option, much like how digital dashboard clocks started out as high-end options in the late '70s, then became standard on everything, until finally analog clocks returned as luxury options for high-end cars. Wow, that was a hell of a run-on sentence.

There's an analog clock in my 2014 Lexus IS (but no digital clock)

I used to own a 1980 Datsun, one of the options the original owner chose was a "quartz digital clock." At the same time, my Dad had an Infiniti G37 (Nissan Skyline 370GT by another name) with a beautiful analog clock in the dash.

What's that big red button for? Passenger-seat ejection?

I forgot to mention that I personally like the analog clock in my car, but a lot of fellow owners/reviewers have commented negatively on it. I recently started wearing a mechanical watch again myself, doesn't even tell time that accurately but I enjoy it nonetheless.

You mean you didn't see that in the order?! Option 1891, pg. 763.
