Default Need some help with picking a car!

Alright guys I am selling my E39 528I and looking to buy an another bimmer. I've found 2 cars, that seems nice and in good condition.

First one is a 1999 BMW M3 coupe, black on black, all stock, 5 speed, 117k miles, one owner car, well taken care garage kept, adult driven and non smoker. The owner is asking $10,900. Hopefully I can workout the price with the owner, not worried about that. Newly posted so no pictures yet.

Second one is 2005 BMW 525I, auto tranny, 112k miles, also well taken care, asking $13,900... i can work the price with the owner.
here is the link if you guys would like to check it.

I'm partial to the e60, nice interior too. Tough call though, these are two completely different animals.

Is this strictly a DD, or are you looking to track/auto-x/etc?

Be mindful of the early E46 chasis problems with rear-subframe (which the M3, with the balls it's got, you'd need to be on the look-out for). See if the seller has had the thing checked or fixed under the recall.

From there, ^ Kale's question is kinda the determining factor in my mind.

Rod bearing recall as well on the E46

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who caught this

Also curious what your expectations are for the car, I think that's going to be the big deciding factor. If you don't go for the e36m I call dibs!

Good call...I lost my mind there. Jake screwed me up.

If you just want a DD, then its not worth an M imo

The two cars you listed are worlds apart.

First, do you need rear doors?
Second, are you planning to use another car for winters?

The E60 is so much more complicated electronically that I would veer towards the M3 unless I absolutely needed the rear seat space and not power. Still, I would favor a 2003 E39 over an E60.

I'd go for the M3 but only if the price was more in line with TMV ~$8000-9000 or so. But I tend to have a pretty heavy foot and totally ignore any MPG rating in my DD. Rationally I'd go for the 525i if just to keep my sanity in traffic as I know I would put a pretty heavy clutch in a 5-speed eventually. Just my 2 cents on the matter, however if it were me I wouldn't follow my advice.

I'm pretty biased though and would be really selective about adding a third BMW to my stable. It would absolutely have to fill a need or purpose or a specific whim I had one day.

@Kenneth, I don't really need a rear doors, im not really worried about that. and no so far i am not planning on using another car in winter, I might buy something else that I could be driving in winter, just haven't thought about it.
@Kale, I need a car for DD and also that I can do something on, that can be used at the track also.
@Brandon, i don't know what i would be doing on it, if i get the m3, but would really love to turbo it.

My main concern for right now is to get a bimmer with a manual tranny and something quick.

As it goes with the price, I haven't talked to the M3 owner about it I still have to test and all. and i don't really worry about how many MPG car give!

I think you have your answer right here. If you pick the auto you will always regret not getting what you wanted in the first place. It may be the best car in the world but if you really *want* a manual then I think you know the answer.

Considering I have an E36, E39 and E60(1). If you want a car for both track and street E36. You know the E39 well enough. The E36 is the least technologically packed, but its the most connected to the ground out of the three. Its also the most sporty. The E60 is extremely comfortable, but its the least powerful and connected. Its the nicest, but its not going to have that sports car feel. There is nothing like the M3, but if the raw sporty feel is not want you want, it won't do it for you.

I do want the sporty feel and something quick now and especially a manual car.. so i think i will go for the M3!

Also I do like the E46 M3's but the ones i find, are the convertible which i dont like and SMG's!
