I may be able to swing by and give ya a hand depending on when you're thinking...

I DO have the vanos tools required to do this, but currently they're on loan to a friend who's rebuilding an engine. Seems like everyone else has my tools more than I have them these days ...

How soon do you anticipate getting to this?

I wouldn't mind swinging by to learn how it's done.

I'm down for helping/supervising with a beer in my hand.

Let me know when and where.

We'll have to do it relatively soon, otherwise it will be glühwein instead of beer because of cold weather.

Tim, it's easier to do the VANOS on the M52TU/M54 (E46/E39) engines since they apparently don't need to be timed, so why don't you get yourself a kit as well?

I have seals that I got for free, not sure if I'll need anything else. Not sure where they're from either. I'll investigate when I get home.

As I've told people before.. assuming you have all parts handy, and someone who knows what they're doin, and no "messin' around" - you could be in/out in under 2 hours easily...

You will also still need a new valve cover gasket (if it's not fresh), and vanos body gasket (regardless). The rest should be easy as pie.

other while in there items include
- valve cover bolt rubber grommets (there are 17 and they're cheap...DO REPLACE)
- sparks plugs
- spark plug coil boots (if broken or torn...especially at the mating area with the spark plug...the minutest breakage can cause shorting to the head--->misfires)

Post when this is happening, my 13 year old beater probably needs this too, but I just want to watch and learn this time around.

Alright, let's make it a date (what is this called in the popular imagination - a "man date"?). How about this weekend (October 8-9)... say on the afternoon of Saturday the 8th?

I PM'd my address and phone to HotDoggin, truekreation, Das Borgen, t96_grh, QtheGenius, and fehder95. If anyone else is interested, let me know.

t96_grh is quite a whiz at cookouts. I have a fire-pit of sorts, and t96_grh will bring charcoal. So it's BYOM (bring your own meat) - for food-consumption, that is. I'll get a 12-pack.

the Babydoo Rally - Borboun Trail Edition is this Saturday, so I'm out. Actually, now that I look at my calander, I really am not free until November. If you guys do this this weekend, take a ton of pics please.

This weekend is going to be VERY tough for me..

Next weekend might fly, but the weekend after (23rd) is full up again, as well as the last weekend in Oct.

Cliffs: Only weekend in oct that works well for me is the weekend of the 15/16 or anything after october..

The following weekend (Oct 15-16) there is a 90% chance that I'll be out of town (actually, out of the country). I should be here for the next two weekends in October (22-23 and 30-31). We can certainly postpone until a time of mutual convenience for the maximum number of people... I'm in no hurry... but we are unlikely to ever find a time fitting everyone's schedule.

There is nothing magical about weekends... I'm fine with weekday evenings. But sunlight would be important if we have multiple cars that would not all fit in the garage, and if we wish to take good quality pictures without using flash (or just using fill-flash).

Sounds good -
The 22nd may actually work, but I'm not going to count on it - If nothing else Rich knows what he's doing... it's a piece of cake with the tools. Seriously!

PM Mike on the BMW parts store and he will send you a print out of all needed to do this. All the needed grommets and everything by part number. VERY helpful!

Valve cover gasket and spark plugs are essentially new. I am hoping to be able to recycle the old VANOS body gasket; is this unrealistic?

Regarding schedule... let's wait until later in the week (say, Thursday) and then decide if this coming weekend (the 8th/9th) is firm or not. As I mentioned above, other than the 15th/16th, I'm flexible.

They really aren't that expensive...it's metal and may get bent in the process of removal, so be on the safe side and grab a new one. Check with Mike down at the BMW Store in Cincy.

Furthermore, it's a crush-gasket. Use it once, and the sealing ridge down the middle becomes flat (and therefore ruined as far as "reuse" is concerned).
