Baddest Grocery Getter EVER.

So, I am pleased to announce that it's officially started... albeit with a rough start - :D (Ending with a trailer wedged in the back of a vehicle, broken glass, bent sheet metal, and almost putting tractor/trailer/car/buddy in the bottom of his parents' water filled quarry.. :shifty4:

So, to begin, the donor vehicle was a "lightly rolled" 1999 Camaro SS.. Low mileage engine (~106k miles).. Picked up in N. Canton OH. car still drove just fine, but frame/A pillar was tweaked and insurance would have certainly totaled it..

Started by dropping engine/tranny and subframe to the ground and pulling the shell over top of the desirable bits.

Got it home, cleaned out the truck bed (after it pissed ATF all over the place), and briefly pushed it to the side -

...Now to find the vehicle to stuff it in... :D

Plan is to find a face lifted E46 wagon-
Some things that should be coming are 285s on all 4 corners (and pulled fenders if necessary), a custom rear end to handle the power, and likely some sort of add-on electronics package to deal with dash-board communications. Power goal is 500+hp at the wheels.

We're off!!

Can't wait to see this.

Glad to see you're finally getting this thing rolling, Gordo! Go get 'em! :bigthumb:

Your really going to have to push that engine to its limits N/A for 500whp... 450whp is a much better goal as drive-ability is better. IMHO

Regardless, This should be an ultra fun car when its done :)

Likely true -
To be fair, it is more of a "stretch goal" - My primary goal, 500hp or not is very high reliability.. I would love to replace my low 20 mpg DD with this mid-low 20 mpg DD...

Just saw a facelift wagon on Craigslist in Dayton I believe. Don't have the link but I do remember it on there.

Has to be a manual to start... Preferably not silver.. NO RUST ALLOWED! :leghump:

500whp n/a isn't pushing an LS.... I was right at 400 through a stalled auto with only a cammed/tuned car. H/C/I with some tight squish through a t56 should be quite close and still streetable. or just toss a charger on the stock motor with a cam/injectors and you're easily there.

Woof.

Looking forward to developments.

You live too close for me to not see this in person, oh and I guess I'll lend a hand on occasion if you tell me what to do with it.

Without having done my "research", the suggestions for the power that I'm hoping for was to head down a path with something like this (400-500 range):

Ported/polished LS6 heads
LS6 Intake manifold
Ported LS6 oil pump
Upgraded timing chain - LS2 or double roller
Mid-size cam (to avoid CRUSHING valve springs as a DD)
Hardened stock length chromoly push rods
Upgraded Rockers
Upgraded Valvesprings

I won't - It may be a slowish project, but I'll always be workin' on it-

This is where some of my reading needs to happen.. I'm still SUPER green to the push-rod world, so much so that I don't even know which way is up as far as performance adders go -

Double valve springs were suggested (PRC) but I neglected to include that.. Oddly enough, Texas Speed was also recommended for the push-rods..

Why 5.3 heads over LS6 heads? (asking cause I'm still newbtastic):clapclap:

M0nk3y 09-07-2013 12:29 PM

Took you long enough to finally back your google chat talk with some progress ;)

owndjoo 09-07-2013 12:52 PM

Texas speed is who I ordered EVERYTHING from when I built my z28 vert last year. PRC ported 5.3 heads tighten up the squish(chamber size) and bump up compression. These are the must haves for n/a builds especially if you are going with like a 224 or 234 style cam. I had a set that were milled to 59cc chambers (11.5:1) but my ms3 cam needed fly cut pistons. I suggest double over beehive springs for peace o mind. Depends on cam size though. I've only ran .600+ lift
